Name: Amy (lynsgirl)
Dh: Jerry
Kids: Edge (7 - 1st grade), Brynna (5.5 - preK) and Nikolas (2.5)
Misc info:
Dh is in the military, so we don't live anywhere near family. Also, dh and I were both homeschooled - dh from grades 5-11
and me from grades 4-11. I had a homeschool graduation, however for 12th grade, because I attended college that year.
How long have you hsed?
A: We are completing our second year.
How many children do you homeschool?
A: 2. DS1 is 7 and in 1st grade. DD is 5.5 and has been doing pre-K kind of things. She'll "officially" start Kindergarten
in the fall. DS2 is 2.5 and honestly only scribbles on paper right now. Maybe in the fall (he'll be 3 in Aug), he'll be more
interested in some sort of educational activity! LOL
What state do you live in?
A: We live in SC.
Why do you homeschool?
A: Let's see - short answer or long answer? lol Short answer is because we feel it's the best choice for our family and
what God wants us to do right now. Long answer is just that - long. Reasons ranging from public education and what we want
our children learning (this way, we choose) to what our responsibilities as parents really are. I'll leave it at that for
now. :-)
What curriculum do you use?
A: Wow, a huge mix. Um, I use ABeka for math and have BJU for *some* of our science/history right now. We do a mix of "traditional"
and unit studies for curriculum, so science/history could be from a totally different source if we're in a unit study. I use
Orton Phonograms for phonics and a "light" approach with The Writing Road to Reading. We have many different books we use
under the heading "Reading." Our Bible curriculum is also varied, kind of depending on what we are studying (unit study).
I try to have a Bible study of some kind that relates to what we are studying in our unit study. Weaver interests me somewhat
because of their Bible-based approach to unit studying, but I also like the freedom that comes from choosing to study things
my children are truly interested in. ("Delight-Directed Learning/Study" as called by Gregg Harris)
What is your homeschooling style? Why?
A: A mix of traditional/eclectic, I suppose. I am trying to find what works best for our family and if something works,
that's what we do.
Do you follow a schedule? Would you share it?
A: I do lesson plans once weekly for Mon-Fri, but sometimes we do school Tues-Sat or whatever if something comes up. We
generally start school anywhere from 8/8:30am-10am, depending on when we all get up and moving. We do have a morning routine
for our family, though, that gets followed, just depends on *when* it starts. I will school in the afternoon if I have to,
but I've found our family works better doing school in the morning.
Have your children ever attended public school or will they in the future?
A: No, they have not attended public school and unless something terribly drastic happens, they won't in the future either.
Do you belong to a support group? Why or why not?
A: Yes. Just a couple of months ago, I joined because I felt like I was in some sort of vacuum, support-wise. I needed
to connect with other homeschoolers around me. I am so glad I did!
